Aims and Components
The English Course is an integrated lower intermediate English language course for students from false beginner to lower intermediate levels. The English Course is a series of integrated English language titles for students from false beginner to intermediate levels. Reading Book 1 is a lower intermediate level course, which comprises: a textbook; a teacher’s DVD with quizzes and audio or video activities; and a self-access web site, where students can access additional materials and glossing and audio support. Reading Book 1 is principally intended for young adult learners at college or university level. The aim of the course is to balance intensive guided reading practise, through numerous textbook exercises, with cutting-edge technology for both classroom use and student self-access study. The units in the textbook cover a variety of reading genres suitable for young adult learners and introduce a wide range of appropriate vocabulary. The course also introduces students to 8 different reading strategies, which are designed to improve students’ awareness of how to approach reading in English. Each unit in the course includes the following: reading examples and several textbook exercises; an explanation of one of the 8 reading strategies; two revision quizzes on the teacher’s DVD; online revision or practice exercises on the web site; plus links to additional reading exercises where students can practise using the unit’s key strategy.
